The house
A castellated house of 1698 above a wide bend of a tidal river on the Cornwall and Devon border, at the centre of a private estate of around 2,000 acres. The woodland gardens were laid out by Repton and fall away to the water, with a wisteria walk and terraces between.
Eleven bedrooms, nine of them en-suite, take up to twenty-two guests, most able to be set as twins; one is on the ground floor with a wet room. There are a drawing room with a log fire, a library, a long formal dining room hung with family portraits, a games room and a farmhouse kitchen with an Aga. Outside are a walled swimming pool, solar-heated in summer, and an eight-person sauna.
The estate team looks after the party and can arrange catering, from private chefs to full meals, and housekeeping through the stay, along with tastings, paddleboarding, archery and yoga. Plymouth and the south Cornish coast are about half an hour away.
